The time has come in my life when I am looking at the proverbial clock of life... and wonder. What have I done? Where am I going?
In my normal morning reading time, I found this Article... while not a completely on topic for what I write about, but is in a way.
I look at the life I have built - school teacher to school administration to FarmHER living a dream that was altered... changed... by what I saw as a crisis... FOOD SECURITY/FOOD SAFETY... WE MUST disrupt the way people access food and it MUST be safe.
The past 6 years have been a whirlwind from the mega farm I built, (70K sq ft/500% growth) ... hired local women (22), helped local schools, and grew amazing food... seemed well... like there could be a better way...I longed to take my lessons bigger... I got the chance when I was disrupted in February of 2017... I always read, watched and considered the movement of food to be the most basic yet... there were barriers to entry...
I set out in March of 2017 to take the lessons I learned, data I had before me to disrupt the way I saw food being grown, where it was grown and how it was grown... I didn’t realize to what extent this would disrupt me... the poverty and hunger... not only in poor places but in places where money isn’t an issue... people were hungry... sometimes bordered on HANGRY...
You may ask, “what does that mean?” Wealth and hunger don’t go together... As countries around the world become more affluent because of technology and other resources... Young people will leave their rural homes for the cities... This movement will strain our current food system... this means if current numbers are right we MUST increase farming by 50% a year...THIS MEANS we MUST build more farms and train more farmers... No one farming modality will solve this... we need more farmers, we are loosing farmers in the US alone at 20K per year.
The young people of tomorrow want more connection to their food, the people who grow it and input on how/what is grown. The movement is “local”... the movement is taking places that haven’t been traditionally seen as grow spots and making them lush... YEAR ROUND... chemical free...FOOD PRODUCING areas.
Today, I look over my 25 month journey and feel invigorated... and happy with the disruption.. Just as Norman Borlaug did with wheat.. we can do with the local controlled environment agriculture. Help me, help others... We can change this hunger landscape.
